Federal prosecutors have charged nearly 20 former NBA players with defrauding the league’s health insurance plan out of about $4 million.
Jamario Moon, Glen Davis and Sebastian Telfair are among the 18 ex-players and one other defendant charged in the alleged scheme that took place from at least 2017 to 2020, The Associated Press reported Thursday.
The former players reportedly submitted false and fraudulent claims to the NBA’s Health and Wellness Benefit Plan for reimbursement of medical and dental expenses that were never actually incurred, according to the indictment.
The plan allegedly received about $3.9 million in false claims from the defendants who received about $2.5 million in fraudulent proceeds.
The Office of the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York is scheduled to hold a press conference at noon Thursday to discuss the indictment.
