From Student to Clinical Chief: Dr. Joubin Gabbay’s Involvement with Cedars-Sinai
SHARE

Cedars-Sinai Medical Center is a non-profit medical institute known for its groundbreaking research, remarkable education, and significant community involvement. It offers extensive programs and services to aid patients and maintains the sixth spot on US News’ list for Best Hospitals in the Nation.

While board-certified reconstructive and plastic surgeon Dr. Joubin Gabbay operates his own practice, he remains actively involved with Cedars-Sinai.

“Be it as a student researcher, a surgical resident, or an attending plastic surgeon, I have always felt a part of that community and have worked hard to thrive with it,” he says of his journey with Cedars-Sinai.

Since Cedars-Sinai is such a holistic medical institution, Dr. Gabbay could engage with it throughout the entirety of his career. In his educational years, he spent multiple summers there, immersing himself in research and gaining hands-on experience from some of the best surgeons in the world. He also gained admission to the prestigious program at Cedars-Sinai for his general residency.

Today, Dr. Gabbay continues his involvement with Cedars-Sinai, but in a different capacity. While he mainly focuses on cosmetic surgery in his practice, by working at Cedars-Sinai, he can aid those who may need his expertise in performing more serious surgeries.

“It has always been important to me to be affiliated with this institution and maintain a close tie to ‘serious’ inpatient medical care,” he shares. Working with Cedars-Sinai gives Dr. Gabbay the opportunity to do exactly that.

This year, Dr. Gabbay was selected to be the clinical chief of plastic surgery at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Expressing his appreciation and enthusiasm for his new position, he said: “Recognition is certainly flattering and is a gratifying reward for the decades of work that I have put into this hospital.”

As the clinical chief, Dr. Gabbay will oversee other plastic surgeons in the hospital, organize speakers to educate surgeons on a variety of helpful topics, and manage several aspects of the plastic surgery division – namely the administrative duties. The attainment of this position is extremely prestigious and one in which only a few plastic surgeons have had the opportunity to fill.

Another aspect of Dr. Gabbay’s ties to Cedars-Sinai is the accessibility he maintains to the institution if a patient of his private practice is facing an emergency. While he places a large emphasis on the importance of safety in all of his procedures, there is always a chance that something could go wrong in the operating room.

Sharing his plan for that rare outcome, Dr. Gabbay says: “I know that if my patients ever need care that extends beyond the outpatient realm or requires emergency management, I always have a world-class institution standing by me ready to help care for my patients.”

Many plastic surgeons are solely respected for their cosmetic work, attending mostly to patients who are electing for voluntary surgery. Dr. Gabbay, however, recognizes the importance of his expertise for those who are facing severe medical emergencies that these plastic surgeons can help navigate.

Throughout his involvement with Cedars-Sinai, Dr. Gabbay proves his purpose in the medical world. He has come a long way in his time at Cedars-Sinai; beginning as a student conducting research for the medical center to now standing as the clinical chief of plastic surgery. This is a testament to his dedication to the institution and passion for medicine in general.

As Dr. Gabbay climbs up the ladder of his successful career, he will undoubtedly continue to retain his involvement with Cedars-Sinai. He acknowledges the importance of his work beyond just his practice. By working at Cedars-Sinai, he has the opportunity to make a larger impact on the medical world and extend his knowledge to others. It is clear that Dr. Gabbay will continue to work closely with Cedars-Sinai for the entirety of his career.
