Mia Dirir | Rising Actress to Watch

Texas born, East African actress Mia Dirir (pronounced ‘di-rare’) is one to watch.

The late 20-something recently wrapped shooting the role of reporter Rebecca Conley in the feature film The Great Turkey Town Miracle directed by Angus Benfield. The feature film is set to premiere in theaters as well as streaming in 2023. Additionally, the bi-coastal actress spent this past summer in Los Angeles filming two projects, most notably the sci-fi SAG-AFTRA short film Mind Over Fatter directed by Marjan Koffa.

Dirir’s love of acting began while playing the character Beneatha in a production of the stage play A Raisin in the Sun. She has also appeared in productions of Bye Bye Birdie and A Streetcar Named Desire. As time went on, her passion for the craft remained, which led to her deciding to pursue an acting career. After receiving her master’s degree in 2021, the Meisner trained actress studied under Nancy Chartier and currently trains with renowned Los Angeles-based acting coach Margie Haber. To date, she has performed in nearly a dozen short films, feature films and theatrical productions.

Dirir is currently gearing up to shoot another film project this winter, Never the Same, in which she’ll be taking on the role of attorney Gloria Green. The drama, directed by Sophia L Ellis, tells the story of five sons and daughters seeking justice. “I hope to continue to work with filmmakers whose work challenges long-standing film and television stereotypes of African and African-American culture and that will depict the complexity that goes beyond the narratives that have been historically told,” she states. “Although there’s still progress to be made, I’m optimistic.”
