In accordance with an artist: “The Bed. A place of rest and security, of warmth and protection. At once a symbol of “home” and the portal to a different world, the world of desires. A mattress generally is a place of ache; or an area for respite from ache.
This work replaces the crisp, clear linen of the archetypal mattress with bruised and battered pores and skin – indicators of abuse and trauma. The bruises and blemishes are the result of a state of affairs that unfolds within the security of the house, hidden by the privateness of the bed room.
The concrete indicators of harm expressed in The Mattress depict the totally different types of abuse that happen behind closed doorways: the bodily, the psychological, the emotional. My hope is that this set up will have interaction the viewers with experiences of hidden abuse and trauma, and with their aftermath; the disgrace, harm, and harm, invisible to the world however nonetheless current even after the bruises fade away.
We’re a way from a time when violence and aggression in the direction of girls and youngsters within the residence was tacitly accepted (even when not all the time condoned). However there’s nonetheless violence, simply not all the time as evident as earlier than. We study in the present day, typically belatedly, of survivors of all types of abuse, and of the humiliating and degrading acts inflicted on them within the bed room and in mattress – supposedly a spot of security, repose and relaxation. I need The Mattress to be uncomfortable; to affect larger dedication to stopping acts of home abuse; and to encourage therapy and therapeutic for survivors.”
