A two-week-old boy who was bitten by a pet canine at a house west of Edmonton on the weekend has died in hospital, RCMP say.

The new child was airlifted to the Stollery Youngsters’s Hospital in Edmonton after the assault Sunday within the hamlet of Entwistle, Alta., about 90 kilometres west of the provincial capital.

RCMP stated Monday the toddler died regardless of one of the best efforts of medical professionals.

The canine was surrendered to officers, and officers continued to analyze.

Const. Julie-Ann Strilaiff stated officers have been wanting on the well being of the canine and never contemplating prison fees.

The breed hadn’t been confirmed, however Strilaiff described it as a medium-sized canine.

“Once the dog has an examination, we can have more determination about what specific breed it is,” she stated.

Strilaiff stated the canine was set to be evaluated Tuesday by a veterinarian for issues like rabies or inbreeding, and an utility might be submitted below the Harmful Canine Act to have it put down.

“We need a veterinarian to be able to assist us with being able to ensure that there wasn’t some other underlying cause,” she stated.

She added that the new child was the one youngster within the residence, and the canine was the household pet.

“Obviously the community is pretty devastated and the family’s devastated,” Strilaiff stated, including sufferer companies can be found to work with the household.

“It’s just a heartbreaking situation for all.”
