Rep. Sylvester Turner has died, in keeping with fellow Home Democrats and his workplace.
The primary-term Texas Democrat had been elected in 2024 to succeed the late Democratic Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, who died in workplace final 12 months.
Democrats introduced his loss of life to their colleagues in a closed-door management assembly Wednesday morning, in keeping with three folks acquainted with the state of affairs.
And in a press release launched later Wednesday, his workplace introduced his loss of life “with profound sadness.”
“Congressman Turner is survived by his loving family, devoted staff and numerous friends who cherished his wisdom, humor and steadfast dedication to public service,” his workplace mentioned.
Different Democrats publicly expressed condolences on X, with Rep. Terri Sewell (D-Ala.) writing: “He leaves behind an extraordinary legacy of service as Mayor of Houston and the Representative for Texas’ 18th Congressional District. May he Rest in Peace.”
A spokesperson for Turner’s congressional workplace didn’t instantly reply to a request for remark.
Beneath Texas legislation, Republican Gov. Greg Abbott is in control of calling a particular election, though there is no such thing as a deadline for doing so. If Abbott calls the particular election, all candidates could be listed on the first poll, and the highest two would go to a runoff if nobody receives greater than 50 p.c of the vote.
Turner, 70, had revealed in 2022 he had undergone remedy for bone most cancers, although he had declared himself “cancer free.”
