The identify “Scan & Go” is trademarked by Walmart-owned rival Sam’s Membership, which has been growing any such checkout expertise for years. An early model of the tech, which launched in 2013, allowed prospects to scan their objects within the app however required them to pay within the self-checkout lane. Later, Sam’s Membership allowed prospects to pay for scanned objects within the app, and is now seeking to substitute self-checkout lanes throughout the U.S. with the tech.

Greater than half of Costco members have downloaded the corporate’s app, and chief monetary officer Gary Millerchip sees the corporate’s foray into “Scan & Pay” tech as a development space for the corporate.
