Logan Thomas’ season ends after being placed on injured reserve

Logan Thomas‘ season is officially over.

The Washington Football Team placed the star tight end on injured reserve Wednesday — and since it’s Thomas‘ second time on the list, NFL rules forbid him from returning this season. Thomas suffered a knee injury in Sunday’s win over the Las Vegas Raiders and while an initial MRI indicated he did not tear his ACL as the team originally feared, coach Ron Rivera said there was still “some damage” in Thomas‘ knee.

As a corresponding move, the team signed running back Jonathan Williams to the active roster.

Thomas got hurt with 10 minutes left in the game. Las Vegas’ Yannick Ngakoue went low and took out Thomas‘ legs on a run play — leading to an outcry from Washington fans who accused the defensive end of a dirty hit.  Rivera said he thought Ngakoue’s hit was “avoidable.”

Thomas was one of Washington’s top pass-game targets — his 6-foot-6 size was crucial when the team was in the red zone — but he missed substantial time this season. In addition to the knee injury, Thomas hurt his hamstring in Week 4 and missed the next six games. He appeared in a total of six games, catching 18 passes for 196 yards and three touchdowns. The team signed Thomas to a three-year, $24 million contract extension just before training camp after a strong 2020 season.

The Burgundy and Gold are left with Ricky Seals-Jones, fourth-rounder John Bates and rookie Sammis Reyes on the roster.

Thomas is reportedly still seeking additional medical options to determine the full extent of the damage. The Athletic first reported Thomas was placed on injured reserve Wednesday.
