The U.S. Open at Torrey Pines kicked off Thursday and the course wasn’t forgiving to Matthew Wolff.

Wolff made history in the opening round by becoming the first player in tournament history to record eight or more birdies and multiple double-bogeys, according to the Twenty First Group’s Justin Ray.

Wolff’s five pars on the day tied the record for fewest made in a sub-par round at the U.S. Open since 1983, according to the PGA Tour’s Sean Martin.

“Golf makes me happy, no doubt about that, but how am I gonna get to where bad shots don’t affect me as much?” Wolff told Golf Channel. “Everyone has bad days and everyone has bad tournaments, and I’m starting to get a little better. Nothing is, like, wrong with me. It’s just, life is sometimes not all peaches and roses.”

The Agoura Hills, California, native carded a 1-under round after logging eight birdies, three bogeys and two double-bogeys.

Russell Henley is the current clubhouse leader after firing a 4-under par round.
