Japan’s Nintendo mentioned Thursday it has filed a lawsuit accusing the developer of a online game jokingly dubbed “Pokémon with guns” of patent infringement.

Nintendo and The Pokémon Firm are suing Pocketpair, the Japan-based studio behind the “Palworld” recreation that grew to become a viral hit when its prototype was launched in January.

“Palworld”—which bought greater than 5 million copies in simply three days—options weapon-wielding participant avatars and monsters that look much like the creatures of Nintendo’s wildly common “Pokémon” franchise.

A Nintendo assertion mentioned the businesses had “filed a patent infringement lawsuit in the Tokyo District Court against Pocketpair” on Wednesday.

“This lawsuit seeks an injunction against infringement and compensation for damages on the grounds that Palworld… infringes multiple patent rights,” it mentioned.

The assertion didn’t specify how a lot compensation was being sought.

Nintendo added it might “take necessary actions against any infringement of its intellectual property rights” to guard what it has “worked hard to establish over the years”.

“Palworld” continues to be in growth however an “early access version” prices $29.99 for US prospects on the net Steam platform.

AFP has contacted Pocketpair for remark.

Pokémon has been a worldwide hit because it was launched as a role-playing recreation in 1996 for Nintendo’s Sport Boy console.

The franchise, whose slogan is “Gotta Catch ‘Em All”, additionally contains films and a vastly common animated TV present.
