Britain doesn’t need to escalate commerce wars, finance minister Rachel Reeves stated Thursday after US President Donald Trump introduced import tariffs on automobiles and auto elements.

The response got here with London locked in talks with Washington over probably securing a post-Brexit commerce deal.

“We’re not at the moment in a position where we want to do anything to escalate these trade wars,” Reeves advised Sky Information.

“We are looking to secure a better trading relationship with the United States,” she advised the broadcaster, including that the Labour authorities was “in extensive talks” with the Trump administration over securing a commerce deal.

Trump on Wednesday introduced steep tariffs on the auto sector, scary threats of retaliation from buying and selling companions forward of additional promised commerce levies subsequent week.

“What we’re going to be doing is a 25 percent tariff on all cars that are not made in the United States,” Trump stated, as he signed the order within the Oval Workplace.

The duties take impact at 12:01 am (0401 GMT) on April 3 and influence foreign-made automobiles and light-weight vehicles. Key vehicle elements may even be hit inside the month.

The UK commerce physique for the auto sector urged america and Britain to strike a deal that avoids Trump’s “disappointing” tariffs on foreign-made automobiles.

“The industry urges both sides to come together immediately and strike a deal that works for all,” Mike Hawes, chief govt on the Society of Motor Producers and Merchants, stated in an announcement late Wednesday.

“The UK and US auto industries have a long-standing and productive relationship, with US consumers enjoying vehicles built in Britain by some iconic brands, while thousands of UK motorists buy cars made in America,” Hawes famous.

He stated that “rather than imposing additional tariffs, we should explore ways in which opportunities for both British and American manufacturers can be created as part of a mutually beneficial relationship, benefitting consumers and creating jobs and growth across the Atlantic.”

Britain’s car-making business is dominated by overseas gamers, together with Nissan, Peugeot-owner Stellantis and BMW which makes the Mini.

The vast majority of their UK-produced automobiles are for export, principally to the European Union.

Talking on the finish of January, Hawes stated america was “an important market” for UK-produced luxurious manufacturers similar to Bentley and Rolls-Royce, including that this allowed for “a greater opportunity to absorb” tariffs.
